On Sunday, May 13, Penn’s College of Liberal and Professional Studies (LPS) welcomed family, friends and faculty to celebrate the graduating Class of 2018. The ceremony took place in the Zellerbach Theatre at the Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts and honored 306 students graduating from undergraduate and graduate programs.
Vice Dean Nora E. Lewis welcomed guest speaker Dr. Camille Zubrinsky Charles, the Walter H. and Leonore C. Annenberg Professor in the Social Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania. A member of the Penn faculty since 1998, Dr. Charles has served as the Director of the Center for Africana Studies since 2009 and was the founding chair of the Department of Africana Studies in 2012. A distinguished scholar of the sociology of racial inequality, Dr. Charles has written and spoken extensively on the causes and impacts of residential segregation. Her first book, Won’t You Be My Neighbor? Race, Class and Residence in Los Angeles, is a frequently-cited resource for scholars and students of racial residential segregation.
