The Classical Studies Post-Baccalaureate Program certificates recognize the academic accomplishment of students who complete the program at Penn. The certificate acknowledges the rigor of Classical Studies at the University of Pennsylvania and the academic excellence that our students achieve in order to earn a certificate. For many of our students, the certificate is also an important milestone on the road to pursuing a classics graduate degree. It is not necessary to apply for the certificates, as they will be awarded at the end of each academic year to students who have satisfied all the requirements.
There are four options for a Classical Studies Post-Baccalaureate Program certificate:
The Advanced Certificate in Post-Baccalaureate Classical Studies recognizes students who have attained at least intermediate proficiency in both Greek and Latin, and who have extended their studies to include graduate-level Greek and Latin courses above and beyond their language courses.
The certificate will be awarded to students who have completed a minimum of six course units of Greek & Latin coursework during an academic year. This coursework must include two course units of graduate-level work (5000-level or above) in Classical Studies or a related field (ancient history, archaeology, ancient philosophy, comparative literature, linguistics, religious studies, Byzantine studies, Greek or Roman art history), as well as a minimum of two course units in Latin coursework at the intermediate (200) level or above and two course units in Greek coursework at the intermediate (200) level or above. Students must receive a grade of B or better in each course and achieve a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.
Advanced Classical Studies Certificate course requirements:
Fall term
- Intermediate Latin Prose (LATN 0300), Post-Baccalaureate Seminar in Latin (CLST 5902) or any Latin course at the 5000 level or above
- Intermediate Greek Prose (GREK 0300), Post-Baccalaureate Seminar in Greek (CLST 5901) or any Greek course at the 5000 level or above
- 5000-level or above in related coursework
Spring term
- Intermediate Latin Poetry (LATN 0400), Post-Baccalaureate Seminar in Latin (CLST 5902) or any Latin course at the 5000 level or above
- Intermediate Greek Poetry (GREK 0400), Post-Baccalaureate Seminar in Greek (CLST 5901) or any Greek course at the 5000 level or above
- 5000-level or above in related coursework
The Certificate in Classical Languages recognizes students who have attained a high degree of proficiency in both Greek and Latin. The certificate will be awarded to students who have completed a minimum of four course units of Greek and Latin coursework during an academic year. This coursework must include a minimum of two course units of Latin at the Post-Baccalaureate Seminar (CLST 5902) level or above and a minimum two course units of Greek coursework at the Post-Baccalaureate Seminar (CLST 5901) level or above. Students must receive a grade of B or better in each course and achieve a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.
Classical Languages Certificate course requirements:
Fall term
- Post-Baccalaureate Seminar in Latin (CLST 5902) or any Latin course at the 5000 level or above
- Post-Baccalaureate Seminar in Greek (CLST 5901) or any Greek course at the 5000 level or above
Spring term
- Post-Baccalaureate Seminar in Latin (CLST 5902) or any Latin course at the 5000 level or above
- Post-Baccalaureate Seminar in Greek (CLST 5901) or any Greek course at the 5000 level or above
The Certificate in Greek recognizes students who have attained a high degree of proficiency in Greek, but who have a lesser proficiency in Latin. The certificate will be awarded to students who have completed a minimum of four course units in Greek and Latin language courses during an academic year. This coursework must include two course units of Latin at any level and two course units of Greek at the Post-Baccalaureate Seminar (CLST 5901) level or above. Students must receive a grade of B or better in each course and achieve a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.
Greek Certificate course requirements:
Fall term
- Post-Baccalaureate Seminar in Greek (CLST 5901) or any Greek course at the 5000 level or above
- Elementary Latin I (LATN 0100) or Intermediate Latin Prose (LATN 0300)
Spring term
- Post-Baccalaureate Seminar in Greek (CLST 5901) or any Greek course at the 5000 level or above
- Elementary Latin II (LATN 0200) or Intermediate Latin Poetry (LATN 0400)
The Certificate in Latin recognizes students who have attained a high degree of proficiency in Latin, but who have a lesser proficiency in Greek.
