Submatriculation

If you are a current on-campus undergraduate student at the University of Pennsylvania, you may begin the MAEDS program while completing your undergraduate degree via submatriculation. Undergraduates in online programs are not eligible for this option. Students may enter the MAEDS program as submatriculants during the first semester of their senior year. They may take up to two c.u. of MAEDS courses as undergraduates: one c.u. in the fall semester of senior year, and one c.u. in the spring semester of senior year.

Penn undergraduates wishing to explore MAEDS submatriculation opportunities should contact the MAEDS Executive Director Michael Lipsitz at lipsitzm@sas.upenn.edu with a brief description of research interests, Penn ID number, and current undergraduate year (freshman/sophomore/junior/senior).

Submatriculation admission requirements

  • Students interested in submatriculation should apply to the MAEDS program during their junior year. Students who do not apply in their junior year are not eligible for submatriculation, but may apply for regular admission to the Master of Applied Economics and Data Science program.
  • The requirement to report GRE scores is waived for students applying as submatriculants.
  • Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA, but higher GPAs are preferred.
  • Students in any on-campus Penn undergraduate school and major may apply; you do not need an undergraduate major in economics or statistics and data science for the program. However, students are expected to meet the admissions requirements, which include basic undergraduate knowledge in economics (through intermediate microeconomics and macroeconomics), including some statistics/econometrics; mathematical background that includes at least two semesters of university-level calculus; and basic programming skills.
  • If you are interested in submatriculating, you should meet with both your undergraduate major advisor and the MAEDS executive director as early as possible. They will help you determine whether this program is a good fit for you and confirm your eligibility.
  • SAS students accepted into the program will need to complete an additional submatriculation plan signed by the MAEDS executive director, your undergraduate major advisor, and your College office advisor prior to your enrollment in the program. All other students should consult with their school to determine what forms need to be completed.

Double-counting courses

MAEDS submatriculants may have two c.u. double-counted toward both the undergraduate and graduate programs. All double-counted courses must be approved by both your undergraduate advisor and the MAEDS executive director.

  • Double-counted courses must be graduate level (typically numbered 5000 or above).
  • Double-counted courses approved for the Master of Applied Economics and Data Science curriculum.
