Course Description
Puerto Rico’s varied climate, geology, and topography combine with periodic disturbance from hurricanes, landslides, floods, and earthquakes to produce a diversity of ecological systems. Human use of the island’s mineral and biological resources together with agricultural production, introduction of invasive plant and animal species, military installations, industrial, commercial, and residential development, and tourism have altered the character of these ecological systems.  During spring break we will visit protected natural areas to observe the flora and fauna and develop an understanding of important ecological patterns and processes of tropical areas.  The course will include regular classes leading up to the spring break trip during which we will review the literature and learn about the ecological systems and human history of Puerto Rico as well as ongoing conservation efforts. We’ll review the trip upon our return and students will complete a research topic of interest related to the field trip and present findings and analysis in a presentation and paper at the end of the semester.  The overall goal will be to develop an appreciation of the biodiversity of Puerto Rico and learn about efforts to protect, restore, and manage Puerto Rico’s natural and cultural heritage for future generations.
