Reading and Writing Speculative Fiction

In this course, we will read and write speculative fiction--science fiction, fantasy, horror, and other fabulist and genre-bending work--to learn how successful stories operate. We will examine foundational craft elements, like narrative structure and voice, and genre-specific devices and strategies through assigned readings, discussion, and writing exercises. During the workshop portion of the course, students will submit two original stories that use speculative tropes and analyze their classmates’ work. This course is open to writers of all levels of experience, including beginners.
